NYC Has 18 Free Career Centers, Because Job Hunting Is Already Expensive Enough
Applying for work should not require purchasing a résumé package, an interview masterclass, and a motivational webinar hosted by someone standing beside a rented Lamborghini.
New York City’s Workforce1 system offers free employment services to job seekers age 18 and older. According to the City, help is available online, by phone, or through 18 career centers across the five boroughs.
Workforce1 can help with résumés, cover letters, interview preparation, career counseling, job-search strategies, training opportunities, and referrals to current openings. The virtual service says applicants can be connected with a career professional within one to two business days.
A referral is not a guaranteed job, and Workforce1 cannot magically make an employer answer an email. Apparently that technology remains trapped beside the Second Avenue Subway’s future extensions. But a free résumé review or practice interview may catch problems before they travel into 40 applications.
To participate in recruitment events, training opportunities, and workshops, job seekers must register and complete the City’s intake process. That may include providing identification, attending an introductory session, and reviewing experience and goals with a staff member.
