NYC Has Three Doors Into a City Job—Stop Knocking on Only One

If your city-job strategy is “submit an online application and stare tragically at your inbox,” New York would like to remind you that there are two other doors.

As of September 20, NYC’s official careers site says applicants can enter City service in three ways: apply for an opening online, attend a recruitment event, or take a civil-service exam. Some events may even allow candidates to arrive with a résumé and leave with a job—which is refreshingly direct for a government that can make you complete three screens just to report a pothole.

The City currently highlights opportunities including Legal Case Writer, Junior Public Health Nurse, Investigator, Assistant School Safety Agent, Special Officer, and Probation Officer Trainee. Openings change, so check qualifications and closing dates on the original listing.

The important part: don’t assume every City position requires an exam before you can apply. NYC says some jobs require an exam before hiring, while others may require it afterward. Search the regular listings first, then check the exam and event options separately.
