Before You Accept the Job, Check the Employer’s Report Card

A job interview is not a royal summons. You are allowed to investigate them too.

On September 4, the NYC Comptroller released its updated Employer Violations Dashboard, covering workplace cases from government agencies. Job seekers can search its records for issues involving unpaid wages, unsafe conditions, discrimination, harassment, unfair scheduling, and illegal interference with union activity.

Think of it as Yelp for workplaces—except instead of complaining that the fries were cold, somebody may have documentation showing that the paychecks were missing.

The dashboard’s 2026 edition uses data from 2024 and 2025, with some records going back to 2020. It does not prove that every employer absent from the list is wonderful, and some entries involve allegations or open cases rather than final findings. Still, it gives applicants another source to check before accepting an offer.

Search the company’s exact legal name, not merely the brand displayed on the storefront. Also search the hiring company if a recognizable brand says you would technically work for a contractor. Your rent requires real money—not “earning potential,” exposure, or a motivational speech delivered beside a folding table.
